January 24 - E. T. A. Hoffmann (The Musical Birthday Series, 2nd Annual Cycle)

E. T. A. Hoffmann (24 January 1776 – 25 June 1822) was an author who dabbled in musical
composition and wrote musical criticism. Many 19th century musicians found inspiration
in his stories.

What's the ETA?

E. T. A. Hoffmann wrote dozens of tales

   With a dark supernatural twist.

There's a sinister fanciful tone that prevails

That composers found hard to resist.

When Offenbach, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, and more,

Wrote opuses based on his stories,

They rejoiced and they relished the chance to explore

   His fantastical fictional quarries.
