Haydn: Chronicle and Works
By H.C. Robbins Landon
Relishes its subject’s quirks
With scholarly abandon.
For many years he worked on his
Quintet of weighty tomes,
Untangling the Life and Biz
With highbrow fine-toothed combs.
What is it like to give your career
To someone else’s bio,
In the archives year by year
Subservient to Clio?
Perhaps the pleasures to be had
Are valuable and various,
And truth to tell, it would be sad
If they were just vicarious.
