Michael Gielen (20 July 1927 – 8 March 2019) was an Austrian conductor and composer known for conducting the most challenging of contemporary music.
Faint Praise
No matter how complex or odd the score,
Herr Michael Gielen took it all in stride.
When in command he gave his struggling corps
A most precise and most exacting guide.
But. When he played a work not heard before,
It came as a surprise to Gielen when
The end was greeted with an eager roar,
Or someone shouted “Encore! once again!”
Envoi in a new stanza
When you become an avant-gardist
The thing that hits the ego hardest
Is learning that the final pause
Signals only weak applause,
But when you’re harden in its ways,
Indifference is a kind of praise.
