Stephen Foster (4 July 1826 – 13 January 1864) was an American songwriter known primarily for his parlor and minstrel music. Many of his songs have become American standards.

Of Foster there are many Lives

  But details vary widely;

In some his reputation thrives,

  In some he’s treated snidely.

And yet if you find

That the South is maligned

They’re probably by an imposter.
