James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos, (6 January 1673 – 9 August 1744) was an English landowner and politician. The Duke is chiefly remembered on account as an important patron of George Frideric Handel.
The True and Authentick Tale of Mr. Handel’s Celebrated
Anthems for His Grace the Duke of Chandos
The Duke of Chandos gained his fame,
Not from pedigree or name,
But because he showed his smarts
As a patron of the arts.
Handel, whom the Duke had hired,
Wrote the things the Duke desired,
And as part of his employment
Wrote Anthems for the Duke’s enjoyment.
