French composer Gustave Charpentier (25 June 1860 – 18 February 1956) had an improbably long life and one highly successful opera.

In Truth

In truth, I’m tempted to reprise

Some former verses on Louise,

But that would be a paltry way

To honor Gustave Charpentier,

Who wrote Louise, then tried again,

And wrote a sequel, Julien,

And when that failed, put down his pen.

Envoi

This one hit wonder of the stage

Survived until a ripe old age,

But things we do in fatuous youth

Are sometimes all we get, in truth.
