Oh, lift up your voice with good will

To honor Miss Mildred J. Hill,

And it wouldn’t be wrong

If we used her own song,

Though she doesn’t get royalties still.

If you count his sonatas, they’re fifty

That the folks of his day thought were nifty.

You may think that his music had died in

The era of Mozart and Haydn,

But consider, we’re now in position

To play from his Urtext edition

Charpentier, by Fate’s peculiar tricks,

Didn’t die ‘til 1956.

Perhaps when people saw him they said, “He’s

The man who wrote the opera Louise,”

But far more likely Gustave took his stroll

Unnoticed in the Age of Rock and Roll.

“In C” by Terry Riley,

Progresses very slyly,

And flows from then to then.

In the eternal when of Zen.

Willkommen

Choreographer Bob Fosse

And the dancers in his posse

Danced with turned in toes,

And slinky fishnet hose,

And bowler-style chapeaux,

In the altogether glossy

Quirky dances of Bob Fosse.

Some Thoughts on Aging

It is a sad and sober truth

That idols of my dancing youth

Have somehow gotten long in the tooth.

You’re at the clubs, you’re having fun,

You’re dancing night has just begun,

Then suddenly the clock has spun

And Cyndi Lauper’s seventy-one.
