Adolf Jensen (12 January 1837 – 23 January 1879) was a German pianist, composer and music teacher.  Although largely neglected today, Jensen was a very popular composer in the second half of the nineteenth century, both in his native Germany and in England.

His pieces were charming miniatures, highly expressive but not too difficult to play or sing. Jensen’s was the kind of music you would want to keep in the piano bench, ready for an evening’s entertainment. –  adapted from Bruce Durazzi, musicb3.wordpress.com/2014/02/21/adolf-jensen-is-bigger-better/

When Adolf Jensen's lovely pieces

Were sung by aunts and lovely nieces,

It was a time when evening pleasures

Would often mean the gentle measures

Of music for the home performer,

Which made the winter evenings warmer.

But modern fashion is to sneer

At music for this atmosphere,

Where Art provides a thin veneer

For sentiments, sincere and clear.

But frankly, is there any harm

In music with such fragile charm.
