June 23 - Stuart Sutcliffe (The Musical Birthday Series, 2nd Annual Cycle)

Stuart Sutcliffe (23 June 1940 – 10 April 1962) was a Scottish painter and musician better known as the original bass guitarist of the Beatles. Sutcliffe left the band to pursue his career as a painter.

Hello, Goodbye

"While Sutcliffe is often described in Beatles' biographies as appearing very uncomfortable onstage, and often playing with his back to the audience, their drummer at the time, Best, denies this, recalling Sutcliffe as usually good-natured and "animated" before an audience." -- Wikipedia

Stuart Sutcliffe hid his face

When on the stage and playing bass.

For his painting and his girl, he

Left the Beatles rather early.

Tragically, this shy young Stu

Died when not quite twenty-two.

Died in Hamburg, after fainting

In a classroom learning painting.

Perhaps it’s just as well, I guess,

He never saw his mates’ success.

Only the Best

The list of those

  Leschetizky taught

Is one that shows

  That students thought

It worth the price

  That they were paying

For his advice

  About their playing.

If you procure

  A Who Was Who

You’ll see they were

  A brilliant crew.

Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach (21 June 1732 – 26 January 1795) was a harpsichordist and composer, the fifth son of J. S. Bach, and is sometimes referred to as the "Bückeburg Bach".

[For last year's verse on Alois Hába click here.]

Call Me By Your Name

He shared his year of birth with Haydn,

And had a dad he could take pride in,

And if his nickname isn’t charming,

It’s not insulting or alarming.

And “Bückeburg Bach,” his frequent moniker

Couldn't have been much more Teutonicker.

June 20 - Jacques Offenbach (The Musical Birthday Series, 2nd Annual Cycle)

Jacques Offenbach (20 June 1819 – 5 October 1880) perfected an operetta style that influenced Arthur Sullivan and Johann  Strauss.

[For last year's nonsense. also on Offenbach click here.]

Shock Jacques

Jacques Offenbach had written fluff,

And though it had élan enough,

He longed to write more weighty stuff,

     Grand opera, to whit.

And knowing all that that entails

He hoisted his artistic sails

And set a few of Hoffmann’s Tales

In which a tragic tone prevails.

But working out the last details,

In one of music’s epic fails…,

He died, and that was it!

Happppy New Year!!!

Guy Lombardo, you’ll remember,

On the last day of December,

Played the tune of “Auld Lang Syne”

Accompanied by sparkling wine.

Perhaps it’s sad it got so big

He’s mostly famous for this gig.

Anges purs, anges radieux

Marguerite, in the final tableau,

Is sick and has nowhere to go.

She sings with two guys,

Then ascends to the skies…

And that is the end of the show.
