A Composer Knows

Sondheim has said of Peters, "Like very few others, she sings and acts at the same time," he says. "Most performers act and then sing, act and then sing ... Bernadette is flawless as far as I'm concerned. I can't think of anything negative." -- Wikipedia

A composer, sans gauges or meters,

Can distinguish the echt from the cheaters,

And Sondheim avers

That perfection occurs

In redoubtable Bernadette Peters.

Attend the Tale,.. Or Not

Josh Groban Knows He's Not Your Typical Pick For Sweeney Todd – headline at playbill.com, February 1, 2023

Whenever a part

  Is cast against type,

It’s likely to start

  A lot of free hype.

Josh Groban was cast

  To play Sweeney Todd,

Which has to be classed

  As terribly odd. —

It’s a lot to get through

  Perhaps he can do it,

There’s scenery to chew,

  Perhaps he can chew it.

But his baritone sound,

  So lyric and light,

Will likely be drowned

By the end of the night.

So I think I’ll ignore

  His chair and his pies,

I’ve seen it before

  With more sinister guys.

Legacy

The fame that Anton Reicha gets

Is for his fugues and wind quintets,

But ponder this before we close,

He mentored Liszt and Berlioz,

And Cesar Franck, Pauline Viardot,

Louise Farrenc, and Charles Gounod.

Papa, Can You Hear Me?

Michel Legrand, who saw potential

In Barbra Streisand singing Yentl,

Wrote a song, sincere and gentle,

Not at all experimental,

But oh so awfully sentimental,

Which Yentl sings to her parental.
