A Quiet Elegy

Sing gently now for Stephen Paulus,

Frequent source of choral solace.

Music from his thoughtful spirit

Still remains for all to hear it

When the cares of life are pressing.

Sing for him a choral blessing.

Anchors Aweigh (1)

Alone Together

In the magically timed combination

Of actor with skilled animation

It’s hard to determine

If Gene or the vermin

Created the greater sensation.

Anchors Aweigh (2)

The Mousetrap

When the star of the film was a teacher

Of dancing routines to a creature,

It brought down the house,

And Jerry the Mouse

Remains the big hit of the feature.

Singin’ in the Rain

Invitation to a Wetting

It would do him no good to complain

As he sang and he danced in the rain;

He knew very well, he

Would hear, “Mr. Kelly,

We’re shooting that sequence agāin.”

An American in Paris (1)

La Bohème

I think that we all can agree

That Bohemian life in Paree

Should probably start

With a talent for art,

And not just balletic esprit.

An American in Paris (2)

Les Americains

When you’re dancing an arty ballet

In a painterly sort of a way,

You’re bound to embarass

The people of Paris

In a gauche echt-American way.

August 22 - Claude Debussy (The Musical Birthday Series, 2nd Annual Cycle)

Claude Debussy (22 August 1862 – 25 March 1918) is among the most beloved composers in classical music.

Sentiment de continuité

When at the piano,

Late or soon,

You’ll have to study

“Claire de lune.”

And aged aunts, who

Hear you play,

Will sigh and nod

Their heads of gray,

And when you’re done, and

They have smiled,

They’ll say they played it

As a child --

Just as you will

On that day

When you in turn hear

Nieces play.

August 21 - Gregg Smith (The Musical Birthday Series, 2nd Annual Cycle)

Gregg Smith (21 August 1931 - 12 July 2016) was an American choral conductor and composer.

[For last year's tribute to Janet Baker click here.]

Smithereens

"My great pride is that we don’t belong to any clique,...We’ve sung many different kinds of music. You name it — serial, atonal, Americana, Minimalist — we’ve sung it." Gregg Smith, qtd, in his New York Times obituary.

The Gregg Smith Singers did the trick

Of staying out of any clique.

Some may think they spent their lives

Singing Billings, singing Ives,

When in fact, they spent their careers

Doing dozens of premieres,

Striving always to program a

Stylistic panorama.

Peri Phrases

In Music History 101

You’ll learn how opera was begun.

They’ll be a lecture with a lotta

Info on the Camerata.

And then you’ll find it’s customary

To hear a little bit by Peri.

And students, when they hear his score,

Have never asked to hear some more.

Two Views on Schwarz

Contra

Some players who played in Seattle

Complained they were treated like cattle,

But the maestro had scored

Enough points with the board,

That the players, thereby, lost the battle.

Pro

Schwarz in Seattle directed

The symphonies (often neglected)

Of academicians

Whose staid compositions

Weren’t nearly as dull as expected.
