October 8 - Louis Vierne; Toru Takemitsu; Walter Schumann (The Musical Birthday Series)

Louis Vierne (8 October 1870 – 2 June 1937) was a French organist and composer.

On the Job

Louis Vierne died in recital
At the church of Notre-Dāme,
Where for years he held the title,
Premier organist of the same.

See him as he chooses stops
On the great Cavaillé-Coll,
Suddenly his body drops -
And Vierne gives up his soul.

Toru Takemitsu (8 October 1930 – 20 February 1996) was one of the first Japanese composers to achieve world wide renown.

October (Birthday) Steps

Toru Takemitsu,
Was a magpie of a kind,
He used eclectic bits to
   Stimulate his mind.

A foundation occidental
   With a Japanese veneer,
A touch of Transcendental,
   And a synthesizing ear.

Walter Schumann (8 October 1913 – 21 August 1958) was the composer of the Dragnet
theme . He is remembered for a number of easy listening choral recordings with
his group, The Voices of Walter Schumann.

Life in the Fifties

The Voices of Walter Schumann,
In their smooth and mellifluous way,
Went well with a double martini
At the end of the 9 to 5 day.
