Jean Sibelius (8 December 1865 – 20 September 1957) was commonly regarded as the greatest Finnish composer.
The Symphonies of Sibelius
When winter, in the North, begins,
The taciturn laconic Finns
Wrap themselves in reindeer skins,
And, eating fish from little tins,
They contemplate prosaic sins,
Or ruminate on might-have-beens.
At such a time, on nights like these,
To warm the soul a few degrees,
They celebrate with somber sprees
And play, on records or CDs,
Sibelius’s symphonies
