Max Reger (19 March 1873 – 11 May 1916) was a German composer who had an unrivaled command of counterpoint and late Romantic chromaticism. Critical opinion varies as to whether this was for better or for worse.
Some Thoughts on Reger
Reger, throughout all his phases,
Reveled in harmonic mazes.
Reger loved an accidental,
Structural or ornamental.
Reger always made the choice
To add a contrapuntal voice.
Reger’s joy was unconcealed
When counterpoint strayed far afield.
Reger found more notes to stick in
Any texture he could thicken, --
And a supposition lingers
Reger wished for extra fingers.
