Perhaps he lays it on too thickly,

And yet the schtick of Peter Schickele

Shows that show biz still allows

For humor aimed at middlebrows.

Schickele, in his comic job,

Shunned the scoffing of the snob,

Shunned the vast uncultured mob,

The source of his success was seen

In cultured strata in between.
