Eleanor Steber (17 July 1914 – October 3, 1990) was an American soprano, and one of the first major opera stars to have achieved the highest success with training and a career based in the United States.
Water Music
In 1973 she recorded a live album of arias and songs for RCA Red Seal at the Continental Baths in New York City where a young Bette Midler was then a regular performer. – Wikipedia
Eleanor Steber, a star at the Met,
Sang with a voice that we’ll never forget.
Critics regarded her Mozart and Strauss
As ranked with the best they had heard in the house;
And using her voice with more charm and less power,
She also appeared on the Telephone Hour.
Another appearance elicited howls:
When she sang at a bath house for listeners in towels.
A recording was made as the great prima donna
Performed her recital for men at the sauna.
