Guillaume Dufay (or more fashionably Du Fay) (5 August, c. 1397 – 27 November 1474) was one of the greatest composers in Western music history.

Taking Sides

In undergraduate music history classes

We listened to his songs, motets, and Masses,

For some it seemed at best a dubious notion

That music such as this had won devotion,

While others felt a spiritual upheaval

And found themselves entranced by the medieval

Strains that once had echoed through the gray

And sculpted Gothic arches of Cambrai.
