George Whitefield Chadwick (13 November 1854 – 4 April 1931) was one of the most respected American composers of his time.

Carefully Taught

His students described him as "demanding, though fair-minded and witty". Among his pupils were Horatio Parker, William Grant Still, and Florence Price. – adapted from Wikipedia

Of Chadwick we can say if we are frank,

His music is at best of second rank,

Which doesn’t make his status any lesser,

Considered as a prominent professor.

Timothy Olmstead (1759–1848) was one of the first American composers. He was also a Connecticut fifer during the American Revolutionary War.

Rebellion

Timothy Olmstead played the fife,

In Continental Army life.

Above the battle he was heard

As shrill as any angry bird

In his disdain of George the Third,

Which was an act of gross disloyalty

To George, the reigning British royalty;

But that’s the sort of clumsy etiquette

They taught the boys in old Connecticut.
