Kay Swift (19 April 1897 – 28 January 1993) was an American composer of popular and classical music. She had a prolonged affair with composer George Gershwin.
Sticks and Stones (A Sequel to Last Year's Verse)
Gershwin and Swift's affair lasted over ten years in all, until his death in 1937. Despite their long relationship, Kay and George never married. As the couple [George Gershwin and Kay Swift] entered a nightclub one evening, Oscar Levant reportedly announced, "Ah, look! Here comes George Gershwin with the future Miss Kay Swift.” – adapted from Wikipedia
Levant, as we've noted, had sniffed
At the courtship of Gershwin and Swift.
He observed that the pair wouldn't budge
Towards the altar or even a judge.
It might have been nice to show deference
To the couple's non-marital preference,
But Levant had a penchant to say
What he said in the bitchiest way
As he put his sharp wit on display
At a party or fête or soirée.
