A Tale in Two Rhymes

Sound your horn and wave Old Glory

For the natal day of Laurie

Anderson, whose music story

Doesn’t fit a category

Where it settles a priori.

To some she is a music god,

They hear her music and applaud,

And leave the concert thrilled and awed,

While others find her whole façade

Outré, outlandish, and, well, odd.

Life and Art; or, Older and Wiser?

This week marked the birth of the late Sonny Bono,

And now, as a contrast, we have Yoko Ono,

Which proves that in matters of musical taste

Checking your horoscope sign is a waste.

Yoko, who lives in a decades-long binge

Of music and art on the avant-garde fringe,

Continues to thrive and continues to find

Work to ensure that she’s not left behind.

But as we get older, and falter and dodder,

And things that we do may get naturally odder,

It brings up the question (and take it to heart)

“This stuff that we do... Is it Life? Is it Art?”
