Changing Fashions

His 1920 octet is somewhat at odds with the innovative style of the decade. While composers such as  Schoenberg and Stevinsky were part of the forward-looking modern trend, Bruch and others tried to keep composing within the Romantic tradition, avoiding the revolutionary spirit of the era. —  Wikipedia

Max Bruch, perhaps, could thanks his genes

For living through the nineteen-teens,

But I suspect, to tell the truth,

He missed the music of his youth, --

A kindlier and gentler era

When one was certain one would hear a

Composition with a key,

In short, the sort of thing that he

Was taught to write, (indeed still wrote),

Where there was sense in every note. –

And if that wasn’t up to date, he

Pointed out that he was eighty.

Sibling Quibbling

He didn’t have a famous dad,

  He had a humble mother;

But Anton Wranizky knew he had

  A much more famous brother.

They had their fame (it wasn’t bad,

With one thing and another) --

But few today (it’s kind of sad)

Know one bro from the other.

G’Day, Mate(ilda); or, Down Under as I Wander

One uses words like “billabong”

When writing an Australian song;

And “coolibah” and “tucker bags,”

And other such Down Under tags.

You could, if you were feeling cocky,

Try “slithy toves” or “jabberwocky,”

Though that might lead to legal peril

From the heirs of Lewis Carroll.

So stick with the distinctive lingo

Of the kangaroo and dingo -

Continue singing willy-nilly

Of the “jumbuck” and your “billy.”

Pentameters for Parton

Dolly Parton’s Dollywood Foundation

Has a branch for childhood education.

Kids, she says, in order to succeed,

Need to learn (and also love) to read.

You’ll know she’s been successful when you hear

That they give out ten million books a year.

Asked and Answered

When Oprah asked Dolly about plastic surgery,

(Beauty they say is only skin deep),

She didn’t dissemble or dabble in perjury,

“It takes a lot of money to look this cheap!”

Eschewing the news

Is the method we choose

To keep up decorum

In this pleasant forum.

But…

Today we will mock

The case of Kid Rock,

Who decided to stump

For Donald J. Trump.

And thus the authoritarian

Exploits the libertarian.
