Mattiwilda Dobbs, coloratura soubrette,

Was the first black soprano to work at the Met.

Shameful it is in our history’s pages

That it took ‘til the 50s to integrate stages.

Fairy Tale

“There are fairies at the bottom of our garden”

Is Liza Lehmann’s claim to fame today,

But oh, Miss Lehmann, please, we beg your pardon

When it’s rendered in a most ironic way.
