Alfonso Ferrabosco (the Elder) (bapt.18 January 1543 – 12 August 1588) was an Italian composer who the one mainly responsible for the growth of the madrigal in England.

Was Ferrabosco acting as a spy?
The evidence, they say, at least implies it.
He kept that business from the public eye,
And did his best, I’m certain, to disguise it.
Musicians often take a second trade
To make a little extra on the side,
Alfonso was suspiciously well paid
And this is why the experts think he spied.
