Alfonso Ferrabosco (the Elder) (bapt.18 January 1543 – 12 August 1588) was an Italian composer who the one mainly responsible for the growth of the madrigal in England.

Many have said that he was a secret service agent for Elizabeth, working during a time when such intelligence was desperately needed; however, little more than circumstantial evidence has ever been produced on this allegation. Was Ferrabosco acting as a spy?

The evidence, they say, at least implies it.

He kept that business from the public eye,

And did his best, I’m certain, to disguise it.


Musicians often take a second trade

To make a little extra on the side,

Alfonso was suspiciously well paid

And this is why the experts think he spied.
