Charles-Louis Hanon (2 July 1819 – 19 March 1900) was a French piano pedagogue and composer.
Heroick Couplets in Praise of Late Lamented Monsieur Hanon
Oh Hanon! on thy natal day we hail
Thine exercises rising with the scale!
Hail Pedagogue! who mak’st our fingers firmer,
Most often in a yellow book by Schirmer!
Thy replicative patterns in C major,
Repeating like the chants of a New Ager,
Are meditative mantras of technique,
Ascending to Parnassus’s high peak!
The ages still acclaim thy glorious mission,
To teach technique with noble repetition;
Immortal Man! Thy name will be alive
As long as keys are played by fingers five!
