Clay's music was widely regarded as not particularly original or memorable, but musicianly and pleasing. – Wikipedia

Clay, a great friend of his fellow composer Arthur Sullivan, introduced the latter to Gilbert, leading to the Gilbert and Sullivan partnership. – Wikipedia

(1)

Just imagine the bright tête-à-tête

When Gilbert and Sullivan met!

The arrangements that day

Were by Frederic Clay,

For which we’re forever in debt.

Though Clay had a certain success

With the public as well as the press,

The reason we know him

Is fact that we owe him

For that crackerjack pair G and S.
