When your spirits are starting to sag,

And your “mindful” routine is a drag,

You can take a first step

Towards more vigor and pep

By playing a Scott Joplin rag.

Prima Donna

She herself looks the image of high disdain, and studiously disagreeable. That is the difficulty: she so insistently set and embodied the loftiest standards that it is hard to exercise affectionate indulgence when she falls short of them. – www.gramophone.co.uk, review of a CD compilation

Lilli Lehmann ruled the stage

Back in opera’s Golden Age.

If you try to understand it,

Listen to her records, and it

Shows that folks in yesteryears

Heard a voice with different ears.

How, we wonder, did they glory in

Voice production that stentorian.

There’s a lesson here, and that’s

That taste in voices, shoes, and hats

Changes as the decades pass,

And nothing stays the same – alas!
