Horatio Richmond Palmer (26 Apr­il 1834 - 15 No­vem­ber 1907) was a choral director, composer, author, and publisher, remembered for his hymn "Yield Not to Temptation".

James Lord Pierpont (25 April 1822 – 5 August 1893) was an American composer, songwriter, arranger, organist, and Confederate . Pierpont wrote and composed "Jingle Bells" in 1857.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Family Tree

James Lord Pierpont played the organ

   And he wrote some pleasant ditties;

Successful nephew J.P. Morgan

   Dominated bank committees.

Although they shared genetic cells

   Transmitted from ancestral loins,

The first found fame with "Jingle Bells"

   The other with his jingled coins;

How different are the branches found

   To sprout from any family tree,

But fruits of both are still around,

   James Lord Pierpont and J.P.

Johann Philipp Kirnberger (24 April 1721 – 27 July 1783) was a musician, composer (primarily of fugues), and music theorist. He was a student of Bach.

One of his most familiar compositions is Fuga in C-dur für Orgel ("Fanfare" Fugue), which was formerly attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach and then to his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. – Wikipedia

He wrote a fugue, but by bad luck

  Two Bachs in turn were credited.

But then, at last, good fortune struck

   And it was correctly edited!

Sergei Prokofiev (23 April [recte 27] 1891 – 5 March 1953) was  Soviet Russian pianist, composer, and conductor. (NB. He believed his birthday to be April 23rd, but it was discovered after his death, that he was actually born on the 27th.] 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Creative Process

The march from The Love of Three Oranges is known

As a stand alone piece which is played on its own.

Of all of the tunes that Prokofiev wrote

The march is the thing that by popular vote

Has earned him a place in the music anthologies

On paper, or vinyl, or newer technologies.

Since "orange" is well known as a word with no rhyme,

Creating these lines was a helluva time,

I've edited, pruned, and revised, and amended them

To make very sure that no "oranges" ended them.

Joshua Rifkin caused a row

By claiming that Herr Bach, somehow,

Performed without a Sunday choir,

Which set the learned world on fire.

Cantatas with one voice per part

Seems rather skimpy for his art.

But think before you rashly judge it,

Perhaps the Thomaskirche budget

Mirrored other congregations

And faced financial limitations,

So hiring choruses for the Lord

Was more than Leipzig could afford.
