May 6 - Carmen Cavallaro (The Musical Birthday Series - 2nd Annual Cycle)

Carmen Cavallaro (6 May 1913 – 12 October 1989) was one of the foremost exponents of the now nearly extinct genre of light piano music.  [For last year's May 6 verse, also on Carmen Cavallaro, click here.]

Epithetical Situation

“Carmen Cavallaro was … known as the “Poet of the Piano”
--- Wikipedia, citing Vocalion Records # VL 73862

When Carmen Cavallaro played
His public seldom sang or prayed;
He worked in venues, large and small,
That featured food and alcohol.

Background music has its place,
And playing it is no disgrace.
There isn’t anything remiss in
Giving folks an easy listen.

Still, it’s odd (above please note it)
That he was dubbed the “piano’s poet,”
And all in all, it’s hard to say
How he earned this sobriquet.
