Claudio Monteverdi (bapt. 15 May 1567 – 29 November 1643) was, by any measure, one of the greatest composers of all time.
The Splendors of Venice

Saint Mark's, with its echoing domes,
Made the grandest of musical homes,
Which encouraged musicians
To vie for positions
In acoustics more splendid than Rome’s.

Says a guide, as his group disembarks
For a musical tour of St. Mark’s,
“Just think how it sounded
As echoes rebounded
In sublime Monteverdian arcs.”
