October 4 - Anonymous (The Musical Birthday Series, 4th Annual Cycle)

Previous posts for October 4th are here: Anonymous and Anonymous IV (2019), Anonymous; Domenico Corri (2020), and Anonymous (2021)

Anonymous ( ? - ? ).  On some days there are few musicians of any prominence celebrating their birthdays, and so for several years I have taken time on October 4th to celebrate that very prolific master, "Anonymous"

Disputed Authorship

“Anonymous’, or “authorship unknown”

Composed a corpus which in time has grown;

But scholars think there must have been a clone,

There’s too much there for one “Anon” alone.

Sure Thing

“Anonymous” has never lost his touch,

Though some would say she's written much too much.

But if you need a song, or chant, and such,

Anon. can be relied on in a clutch.

Crossover

When music has no name upon it,

A cataloguer may “anon” it.

In fact, when attributions gone it

Also happens with a sonnet.
