Carl Orff (10 July 1895 – 29 March 1982), though prolific, is largely remembered for his enduringly popular Carmina Burana, and his pedagogical Schulwerk.
On and Orff
“O Fortune, like the moon” – opening chorus of Orff’s Carmina Burana
“O Fortuna, velut luna”
Heed the warning of the choir!
Fortune plays a fickle tune, a
Day of ice, a day of fire!
“O Fortuna, velut luna”
First you’re lower, then you’re higher,
One day soaring, all too soon, a
Change will come, you’re in the mire.
“O Fortuna, velut luna”
Life is but a tightrope wire,
Fortune bursts the rising balloon, a
Serf usurps his erstwhile sire.
“O Fortuna, velut luna”
It’s no use if you inquire;
Read the entrails, cast a rune, a-
-las! We’re all defeated by her.
