John Wainwright (bapt. 14 April 1723 - bur. 28 January 1768) was an English church organist and composer, remembered for his Christmas hymn "Christians, awake, salute the happy morn".
Christmas Past
I was surprised and amused to read in the Stockport Heritage Magazine that each Christmas morning Wainwright's ghost is said to rise from his grave (just outside the door of St Mary's) and enter the church to check that his music [to "Christians, awake, salute the happy morn"] is still being played. –www.carlscam.com
The story goes that Wainwright's ghost
Salutes the happy morn,
And listens from his spectral post
To hear his tune reborn.
