It’s rare to find a chef who feels

That flutes go well with gourmet meals,

And so a flutist seldom toodles

To complement you beans or noodles,

You’ll rarely use a fork or knife

To pleasant tunes upon the fife,

And though it isn’t absolute,

(This strange aversion for the flute),

The music heard in restaurants

Is seldom that of J. J. Quantz.

Sing, O Sing of how much more he

Opened up the repertory,

Introducing fluting folk

To wonders of the High Baroque!

Sing of works of all descriptions,

Sing commissions and transcriptions!

Sing how, since his sales were brisk,

He put the whole shebang on disc!

Sing of Jean-Pierre Rampal,

The greatest flutist of them all!

And now it’s safe to say that very hall may

An effort was made to recruit

Some players for jazz on the flute.

And thus there began

For the young Herbie Mann,

A lucrative lifelong pursuit.

 

There are those who are quick to dispute

Whether jazz should be played on the flute.

Said young Herbie Mann,

“I think that I can,”

But the critics said, “Isn’t that cute.”

Edie Adams was the star

Or would they have preferred that he stop,

And come back to the blacksmithing shop?

It should be observed, if he had,
