Mann Oh Mann Oh Mann: Variations on a Theme

"The critics, for the most part, were not impressed. ''To most jazz critics I was basically Kenny G,'' he said in an interview....'I was too successful. I made too much money.' " --from Herbie Mann’s New York Times obituary

Some players for jazz on the flute.

And thus there began

For the young Herbie Mann,

A lucrative lifelong pursuit.

There are those who are quick to dispute

Whether jazz should be played on the flute.

Said young Herbie Mann,

“I think that I can,”

But the critics said, “Isn’t that cute.”
