The Before Times

Throughout his career, Vandross was an in-demand background vocalist for artists including Todd Rundgren, Judy Collins, Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Ben E. King, and Donna Summer. -- adapted from Wikipedia

Vandross also wrote and sang commercial jingles for companies including NBC, Mountian Dew, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Burger King, and Juicy Fruit. -- adapted from Wikipedia

Before he had a star career he

Backed up everyone (or nearly).

Before he got his solo break

He took the sessions he could take.

Before his Grammy winning singles.

He made a living writing jingles.
