The Harp that Once

He also took his harp to stages where the instrument was a stranger: the Grand Ole Opry and the syndicated television show "Hee Haw."  – New York TImes obituary, June 11, 1994

Don’t complain, or whine, or carp

   Because today I’m choosing

“The Liberace of the Harp”

   For my poetic musing.

He took the harp to stages where

   His instrument was foreign,

To places where a harp had ne’er

Been heard or seen before in.

Lloyd Lindroth wore a sparkling suit

   With Liberace’s flash,

So join with me as I salute

   Improbable panache.

Close your apps! Put down your phones!

Yippie-ki-yay for Stanley Jones!

(Of course I know he went by “Stan,”

But “Stanley” helps the verse to scan.)

A single hit concerning Ghostly

Riders has defined him (mostly).

Unusual Case

Cecilia Bartoli sings passages faster

Than anyone else's, without a disaster,

And this is the reason that Bartoli can

Sings repertoire written for Malibran,

And tackles with fervor the fire and smoke

Of music composed in the High Baroque,

And does it all in (and this is strange),

Both the soprano and alto and range.

Songs with a Hook

Much of Hook's music can be described as delightful and charming rather than pedantic and trite… – Apple music

Hook composed two thousand songs

To entertain the British throngs.

And even critics, often spiteful,

Thought that his success was rightful,

And declared his songs ”delightful,”

Not pedantic, dull, or triteful.

Kids These Days

Every year in May or June

The stirring strains of Elgar’s tune,

That well-worn academic hymn,

Echo in the high school gym.

But students are inclined to romp

In spite of Circumstance and Pomp,

An attitude which takes the starch

From Elgar’s grand Victorian march.

Fons et Origo

Elsner diaried of Chopin: "Chopin, Fryderyk, third-year student, amazing capabilities, musical genius."  -- Wikipedia

While Joseph Elsner wrote a lot,

The only lasting fame he’s got

Derives from teaching Chopin theory,

And so it’s a relief to hear he

Embarked on his responsibilities

Aware of Chopin’s capabilities.
