Edward Elgar (2 June 1857 – 23 February 1934) was arguably the most important British composer between Purcell and Britten.
Kids These Days
Every year in May or June
The stirring strains of Elgar’s tune,
That well-worn academic hymn,
Echo in the high school gym.
But students are inclined to romp
In spite of Circumstance and Pomp,
An attitude which takes the starch
From Elgar’s grand Victorian march.
