Dakota Staton (3 June 1930 – 10 April 2007) was an American jazz vocalist.
In Which an Excerpt from Her Obit Is Translated into Heroic Couplets
"But she never attained the fame of singers like Dinah Washington, whom she cited as a deep influence. This may have been partly because Ms. Staton was born a hair too late; by the time she began recording albums, rock ’n’ roll was shouldering aside her brand of bluesy jazz." --- Margalit Fox, in New York Times obituary
Dakota Staton, by a twist of fate,
Was born into this world a hair too late,
Her bluesy brand of jazz had, on the whole,
Been shouldered out by nascent rock ‘n’ roll.
But Capitol kept busily compiling
Recordings of her tangy vocal styling,
And thus they foiled the baleful role of fate in
The singing career of Ms. Dakota Staton.
