July 3 - Ruth Crawford Seeger (The Musical Birthday Series)

Ruth Crawford Seeger (3 July 1901 – 18 November 1953) wrote one of the greatest string quartets by an American and extremely influential folk song arrangements. The Seegers were, of course, one of the great American musical families.

To the People

Ruth Crawford Seeger
Had dual careers —
   Composer and folk song researcher.
In her first she was eager
To challenge our ears,
In her second, for working class nurture.

Envoi

And thus we can say,
Though it seems enigmatical,
There’s more than one way
To be musically radical.
