August 9 - Johann Michael Bach (The Musical Birthday Series, 2nd Annual Cycle)

Johann Michael Bach (bapt.19 August [O.S. 9 August] 1648 – 27 May [O.S. 17 May] 1694) was a German composer and organist, and related to J. S. Bach as explained below. (Some standard sources are content to give his birth date as August 9th and be done with it, so that is what I've done here.)

[For last year's short tributes to Reynaldo Hahn and Albert Ketélby go here.]

Relatively Speaking (1)

"He was... first cousin, once removed and father-in-law of Johann Sebastian Bach (he was the father of J.S. Bach's first wife Maria Barbara Bach.-- Wikipedia

J. S. Bach’s cousin

    Once removed,

    Was father to his wife.

With Bach’s by the dozen

    The chances improved

     Of a semi-incestuous life.

His most-performed work is the small chorale prelude for organ, In Dulci Jubilo, which for many years was attributed to J. S. Bach (it was ascribed the catalog number BWV 751). -- Wikipedia

Johann Michael Bach arranged

“In dulci jubilo,”

And though the notes remained unchanged

Posterity would know

This little piece, when it was done,

And given to the ages

As J.S.B.’s seven-fifty-one

On the Verzeichnis pages.
