February 5 - Barrett Strong; Christian Gottlob Neefe (The Musical Birthday Series, 2nd Annual Cycle)

Barrett Strong (b. 5 February 1941) is an American singer and songwriter. Strong wrote the lyrics for many of the songs recorded  by the Temptations. For back ground on the verse below, see this article in the New York Times "For a Classic Motown Song About Money, Credit Is What He Wants".   [This post is in celebration of Black History Month.]

"...Barrett Strong, who first recorded “Money” and, according to records at the United States Copyright Office in Washington, was originally listed as a writer of the song, says that he has never seen a penny of those profits." - New York Times, 31 August 2013

Barrett Strong recorded “Money”,

And, he says, co-wrote that hit.

Sad to say, when he was done he

Never made a cent from it.

Though we later heard him rhyme

  In stacks of Motown songs,

None of that can turn back time,

  Or right those early wrongs.

Job Well Done

Since Adelheit von Veltheim

  Was Neefe’s great success,

It seems, perhaps, surprising that

  He’s famous nonetheless.

But Neefe had another gig

  Another skill to feature,

And he went down in history

  As Beethoven’s piano teacher.
