Artur Schnabel (17 April 1882 - 15 August 1951) was an Austrian-American classical pianist, composer and teacher known for his intellectual seriousness as a musician.

Schnabel claimed that he dropped virtuoso showpieces from his repertoire because he decided that he wanted to play only "music which is better than it could be performed". - adapted from Wikipedia

In the programs that he gave,
Liked the Classic Viennese,
And plumbed the depths he found in these.
For him, the works that made the grade
Were “better than they could be played.”
