Joseph Brackett Jr. (6 May 1797 – 4 July 1882) was an American songwriter, author, and elder of The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, better known as the Shakers. The most famous song attributed to him is "Simple Gifts."

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Too Soon

“Simple Gifts” which was written by Brackett

Would have earned the composer a packet,

But the guy couldn’t aim

At a copyright claim

Since the laws at the time wouldn’t back it.
