Giovanni Paisiello (9 May 1740 – 5 June 1816) was one of the preeminent opera composers of the Haydn-Mozart generation. His La serva padrona retains a small place in the repertoire, especially with workshops and smaller companies.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Out with the Old, And In with the New

When Rossini set his own version of Barbiere to music in 1816, under the title of Almaviva ossia la inutil precauzione, the fans of Paisiello stormed the stage. -- adapted from Wikipedia

When Rossini’s Barbiere was staged,

Paisiello had fans who engaged

In demonstrative actions

Of dissatisfactions,

And departed the theatre enraged. 

But history has proven them wrong,

And even in matters of song,

When worth is contested

The weaker is bested,

And victory belongs to the strong.
