Jules Massenet (12 May 1842 – 13 August 1912) was a French composer best known for his thirty plus operas, especially Manon and Werther.
Naming Rights
Jules Massenet, I’m sure you know,
Didn’t write Manon Lescaut;
He wrote Manon, without the surname,
Because, he reasoned, that was her name.
Puccini had a different whim
And so he used her patronym.
