There has always been critical friction

Concerning Joan Sutherland’s diction;

The words were, for her,

A homogeneous blur,

And never a source of restriction.

The perfection of Sutherland’s trill

Is still a spectacular thrill;

Though others aspire

To equal its fire,

I’m doubtful that anyone will.
