Away from It All

Esteemed in England, he and Anna settled in London in 1936, modestly teaching, playing and composing, to a strict daily routine. -- Wikipedia

Nikolai Medtner, who spent his maturity

   Quietly living in Golders Green,

Lived there years of domestic obscurity

Content with his disciplined daily routine.

To Wieland Wagner, rocks and trees,

And other trappings such as these

Should be replaced in every act

By settings on the stage which lacked

And hint of time or place,

But loads and loads of empty space.
