++++++++++++++++++++++++++

AndrĂ© Campra (bapt. 4 December 1660 – 29 June 1744) was a French composer and conductor.

Knowing Ones Place

Campra was the leading French opera composer in the period between Jean-Baptiste Lully and Jean-Philippe Rameau. adapted from Wikipedia

Today my reflection relates

To Campra’s unfortunate dates;

With deplorable luck

His employment was stuck

In the gap between two of the greats.

Serial Solution

A composer around 1950

Was feeling confused and adrift. He

Looked at the trends,

And then joined with his friends

In thinking that Webern was nifty.

Pedigree

Padre Soler's most celebrated works, his keyboard sonatas, are comparable to those composed by Domenico Scarlatti (with whom he may have studied). – adapted from Wikipedia

The sonatas of Padre Soler

Have a bright and Scarlatti-like flair.

Whether pupil or not,

It is clear that he’s got

A legitimate claim as his heir.

And That’s My Vinyl Offer

To Peter Carl Goldmark we

Owe the format of LP

(The ones that spin at 33).

And thus did Goldmark seal the fates

Of discs that played at different rates,

(Like 45s and 78s).

Unlikely Speculation

I wonder if Sylvia Syms

Was tempted by lighthearted whims

To vary her style

At the Cafe Carlyle

With old-fashioned Protestant hymns.

Arty Sarti

Sarti's opera Fra i due litiganti il terzo gode has been immortalized by Mozart, who introduced an air from it into the supper scene in Don Giovanni.  – Wikipedia

Not knowing his music won’t shame us,

And professors and critics won’t blame us,

For aside from some notes

Used by Mozart in quotes

His music is not at all famous.
