Adams, Not Family

By a happenstance hard to enhance,

Which I wouldn't have known in advance,

It’s the birthday of Bryan,

And also of Ryan,

Two Adamses caught in one glance!

Succession

Thomas Sanders Dupuis

Had the talent and luck to be

Chosen for the Chapel Royal,

As organist, august and loyal,

Having been the legal choice

On the death of William Boyce.

Elegiac Envoi

At death, with honors there to grab, he

Found his tomb within the Abbey.

And since he reached these heights, it’s rotten

That his name has been forgotten.

Unrecorded Now

Tausig was considered by some critics to be the most distinguished (pianistically) of Liszt's pupils and to carry pure virtuosity to heights only suggested by Liszt. Anton Rubenstein called him "the infallible." – Wikipedia

What we wouldn’t give to hear

Tausig play; he had no peer.

“Infallible” they sometimes called him,

And critics of the time installed him

In a high Parnassian shrine,

And when he died at twenty-nine

All his fellow pianists grieved, —

But secretly they were relieved.

Consider Vincenzo Bellini

In Italy’s opera scene; he

Wasn’t as sweaty

As G. Donizetti,

And wasn’t as fun as Rossini.

Brotherly Love

Julius Reubke’s brother Otto prepared the Sonata on the 94th Psalm for its first publication in August 1871. – adapted from Wikipedia, s.v. “Julius Reubke”

When Julius Reubke died too young,

He left behind a pile of work.

His younger brother searched among

   The elder’s papers, didn't shirk,

Until he found the precious ink

   Where his brother had composed

His great sonata, and I think

   He knew what Destiny imposed.

Quilter Filter

According to Valerie Langfield, his style "was indisputably English" despite his German training, and once matured around 1905, did not develop further. -- Wikipedia

He discovered his musical truth

In the style that he found in his youth;

Though he lived to old age,

There was never a page

That was ugly, ill-bred, or uncouth.

Embracing Technology

Emma Albani, a Canadian singer,

Deserved all the fame that her singing could bring her.

While touring in Europe, she sang for Victoria,

Which doubtless filled both with artistic euphoria.

You can hear how she sounded, preserved on recording,

But listening on YouTube is less than rewarding.

Her voice, when recorded, was tired and frayed,

And recording equipment on which they were made

Wasn’t kind to a voice that had taken a battering,

And the resulting recordings are not very flattering.
